ULFA signs historic peace accord with Centre and Assam government

In a significant development, the pro-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) inked a peace accord with the Central government and the Assam government on Friday. The signing ceremony, attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, marked a crucial milestone in the resolution of the decades-old insurgency.

Under the Memorandum of Settlement, the ULFA faction led by Arabinda Rajkhowa formally committed to renounce violence and integrate into the mainstream, signaling a substantial step toward bringing an end to the long conflict. Central government's unconditional negotiations with the Rajkhowa-led faction spanned over 12 years, culminating in the historic peace pact.

Union minister Amit Shah said it was a matter of joy for him that the agreement was signed."It is a matter of joy for me that today is a bright day for the future of Assam. For a long time, Assam, Northeast faced violence and after PM Modi became PM in 2014, efforts were made to reduce the gap between Delhi and Northeast," he said.
